From splendid coral reefs to the comprehensive mesh of river bodies, and from the magnificent backwaters to the greenest valleys, Kerala has a vivid and differed topography that no other Indian state takes pleasure in. On a recent journey to this exotic land, I took to discovering the national forests in Kerala. Though it seemed like an impossible task, I did handle it well! Here are my experiences.
Kerala is a tropical paradise and has as many as 6 national forests for one to explore. To discover the length and breadth of wildlife in Kerala, you need a minimum of 5 to six days.
Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary
Starting from near Kochi (where my flight landed), the very first stop was the enchanting Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. Situated on the bank of Vembanad Lake in the backwaters of Kerala, this bird sanctuary is home to the biggest number of migratory birds in India. Here, I handled to spot larks, herons, cuckoos, owls, the Siberian crane and a flycatcher. Exactly what a terrific start to this expedition in the wild, I admitted to myself.
Periyar National Park
Up next was the most waited for journey to the tiger reserve at Periyar National Park Positioned in the Western Ghats, the region is also called Thekkady and is adorned with lavish green appeal and is accessible throughout the year. Nevertheless, there is extremely limited access for travelers. I can not describe my dissatisfaction when we might not find a tiger but a herd of elephants, a periodic peeking deer, lazy reptiles, believing macaques and a number of birds like kingfishers and the Malabar Hornbill were welcoming sights that I will never forget. The boat cruise in the picturesque Lake Periyar was a fantastic trip that brought us closer to this idyllic land. The feeling of being 'out in the wild' was rapidly sinking in and I could not think of going back to the dull life of shopping malls and processed food.
Eravikulam National Park
Just 15 kilometres from Munnar, we stopped at a stunning meadow ecosystem with meandering rivulets in Idukki district at the Eravikulam National Park. The national forest is popular for the Nilgiri Tahr, an endangered types of goat which we did manage to catch a glance of by a stream! Exactly what a sight it was to view it drink calmly from the stream uninformed of onlookers. Keep in mind, the park is closed during January to April since it is the calving season of the Nilgiri Tahrs.
Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary
The next day, we visited the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary from Munnar where we handled to get a comfortable and gorgeous hotel. The sanctuary is situated in the rain shadow area of the Western Ghats and therefore has nearly a two-month long rainy season. In this deciduous forest, one can intend to find the endangered Giant Grizzled Squirrel while enjoying a trek in the beautiful environs.
Silent Valley National Park
Found in the Nilgiri Hills in the Palakkad District of Kerala, Silent Valley National Park was my last stop on this path of wildlife reserves. The reserve is also among the most well-preserved environments for tigers. Quiet Valley is one of the most lively rain forest locations and homes an astounding number of special species of flora and animals.
